The Race

The first Golden Globe Race was run in 1968. Nine started but only one finished, (Sir Robin Knox-Johnson.)
Fifty years later the second GGR, in 2018 was organised by McIntyre Adventures in the spirit of 1968. Eighteen started, five finished.
The next GGR (also organised by McIntyre Adventures) will start 4th Sept 2022. It is a solo, non-stop, yacht race around the World, starting and finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne. Competitors will sail down the Atlantic, leaving Trindade Isle, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn to port. Then back up the Atlantic to the finish.
There will be around thirty starters, simple strong old fashioned boats with long keels between 32' & 36', using traditional seamanship to keep them moving fast in a safe way.
It is so exciting, satisfying and above all affordable for people like me.
The race is a journey about finishing, Less than 100 people in the world have managed to do it so far. My Saltram Saga 36 is the best boat for the race. I am in it to win, I will do my best. Planning and preparation is my main goal from now to the start.
The equipment used has to be from the original 1968 race. So GPS, Chart plotters, Electric autopilots, log's, wind instruments, iPhone, digital cameras, computers, cd players, pocket calculators, electronic clocks or watches, water makers and many more modern items are not allowed. Navigation is done in the old way with radio Direction finder and sextants.
